Sexuality and Gender

Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres.  Grande Odalisque.  1814.

Edward Manet.  Olympia.  1863.
Contemporary “venus”

Write at least two pages comparing and contrasting Ingres’ Grande Odalisque with Manet’s Olympia, and a contemporary image of a “venus” of your choosing.  (Please provide a copy of the contemporary image you have considered.)  Who are these women and why are they deemed worthy subjects of art?  How does sexuality work in these images where only a single figure is depicted?  What larger, cultural understandings about sexuality and gender are present within each image?  How do the images either work to contradict those understandings or endorse them?
